Uphold Compliance and Self-Regulation, Jointly Establish Industry Standards —— Wood Industry Forum on Compliance Development and Internationalization Successfully Held
On May 15, 2026, a thematic forum on compliance development and internationalization of wood enterprises was successfully held in Laibin, Guangxi. The event was co-hosted by the China Timber & Wood Products Distribution Association and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). More than 30 participants, including industry experts, representatives from timber trading and processing enterprises, as well as international organizations, attended the forum. Centering on compliance development and overseas expansion of enterprises, attendees discussed new approaches for industrial upgrading.

Yang Yuqi, representative of Germany’s TTT Project, introduced the strategic positioning of trilateral coordination among China, Germany and African countries. Yang stated that the project will support pilot implementation of due diligence regulations and industry self-regulatory codes, promote mutual recognition between Chinese and foreign industries, recommend compliant domestic enterprises selectively, and invite enterprises to take an active part in standard formulation. Tang Zhenzhong, Director of the Information Center of the Association, reported on the progress of the Code of Due Diligence for China’s Wood Industry Supply Chain. Aligned with ISO 38200 and incorporating requirements such as EUDR, the code will launch full industrial chain pilots covering African timber and other wood products in 2026. Ma Siran, Secretary-General of the Importers and Exporters Branch of the Association, interpreted the revision of the Industry Self-Regulatory Code, clarifying its core provisions and improvements to align with international standards.

During the keynote speeches, Tang Huanhao, Chairman of Great Wood Holdings Limited, Jiang Hao, General Manager of Yihuang Wood Industry, and Song Qiyan, General Manager of :Acme Building Material shared practical experience in source-side compliance, market assessment and overseas expansion for small and medium-sized enterprises. Sun Jian, representative of PBN, analyzed the due diligence requirements and relevant risk cases under EUDR, and recommended open-source due diligence tools. In the panel discussion, all participants reached a consensus: proactive compliance is the optimal path for long-term corporate development. The industry should abandon cut-throat price competition and jointly develop independent standards tailored to China’s industrial realities.

The forum sorted out prevailing international compliance trends in the timber sector, internal and external challenges facing China’s wood industry, as well as paths for transformation and upgrading.

Going forward, the Association will focus on four key tasks: advancing in-depth participation of pilot enterprises, ensuring practical implementation of provisions under the Code of Due Diligence for China’s Wood Industry Supply Chain, innovating enforcement mechanisms for the Industry Self-Regulatory Code, and advancing international recognition of domestic standards. It will refine pilot plans and revise the self-regulatory code, helping Chinese wood enterprises evolve steadily from rule followers to rule co-builders.
